Maggie Shiveley - Employment Specialist

Maggie has been working in the field of deafness since 1972, with 17 years in vocational rehabilitation. She has attended numerous trainings in assisting ex-offenders prepare for re-entry into the workforce, supporting people with disabilities in the workplace, educating employers regarding possible tax credits, and working with individuals of diverse cultures.

Maggie describes herself as a "self taught" signer. She taught herself sign language at age 16 with help from her sister-in-law, the first deaf person she’d met. With her help and a sign language book, Maggie learned basic sign language. Eventually she attended Shawnee State University where she interpreted for the deaf students. Maggie spent four years interpreting in the educational field at the Scioto County Joint Vocational School. She also coordinated and taught sign language classes at the community college in Ashland, KY and Southern Ohio Medical Center. For three years Maggie was the Southern Ohio lamaze coach for pregnant women who were deaf.
